“Who Will Win This Year’s Diaspora Literary Award?
Presenting the Eight Finalists for the 2022 Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award”

- Nominations accepted from June 2021, judging continues until July 2022
- One novel awarded, winner to be announced in October

Bucheon City has released the shortlist for the 2022 Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award (BUDILIA).

The shortlist contains six works selected by the judging committee, including Kim Soom’s <떠도는 땅>, as well as Sunjeev Sahota’s selected by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and Min Jin Lee’s , which was nominated by the Bucheon Writer’s Group.

The 2022 BUDILIA kicked off with a call for nominations in June 2021. The prize is awarded to a full-length novel on the theme of diaspora that has been published in Korean or English.

The selection process for the final candidates has taken place over the past year.
The Nominations Committee, comprised of literature experts from eight language spheres (Korean, English, German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and French), completed the first round of screening in December last year, and the Judging Committee has been drawing up the final shortlist since January 2022 as they go through the chosen novels.

To stimulate interest in the eight novels on the shortlist, Bucheon plans to create both infographics that briefly summarize the plot and videos featuring major scenes from each novel read aloud by musical actors.

The Judging Committee is currently carrying out the final screening, and only one of the eight novels on the shortlist will be confirmed as the prize winner, dependent on approval from the Steering Committee and the recipient’s ability to attend the awards ceremony. The announcement of the winning novel and the awards ceremony will take place in October, with the exact date to be finalized through discussions with the winner.

The central theme of the BUDILIA is diaspora, a broad term that encompasses all human activities in which people transcend ethnic and regional identity by leaving their former home, either against their will or of their own volition, in order to expand their sphere of living. The BUDILIA is an international literature award for novels that capture such stories. The 2021 BUDILIA was won by Ha Jin for his novel (translated by Wang Eun-Chull), with the awards ceremony held on November 23, 2021 in Art Bunker B39.
