As the first East Asian city to become a UNESCO Creative City, Bucheon launched the Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award to instill pride in the people of Bucheon and carry out our promise to the international community to contribute to global literature development and exchange.

With the goal of expanding the subject matter and scope of Korean literature, Bucheon took an interest in the concept of ‘diaspora,’ which is rising to become part of the global agenda in an era of global migration. Bucheon began laying the foundations for creating an international literature award after receiving professional advice in 2019.
The Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award, which is both Bucheon’s first international literature award and the first of its kind in the field of diaspora literature*, is going full steam ahead toward the goal of hosting the inaugural awards ceremony in 2021.
*Diaspora literature: Literature written by migrants living in host countries that covers themes of adjusting to life in a new land, the philosophy of otherness, and cultural hybridity
Now that the success of Diaspora literature has been proven globally through achievements such as Kazuo Ishiguro’s receipt of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature, Bucheon hopes the Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award will play a leading role in the literature ecosystem by pioneering a new chapter in contemporary writing.
