In October, we welcomed Takami Nieda, who is a Japenese- English translator based in Seattle, our sister UNESCO Creative City of Literature, as the 2021 writer in residence.
During her stay, she worked on editing her translation of Travelers of a Hundred Years, an epic novel by zainichi Korean writer Lee Hoesung, part of an initiative by Literature Translation Institute Korea to trasnlate writers of the Korean diaspora into English. Other than her translation work, she was invited to participate in several activities to be connected with the local community.
Takami Nieda participated in a discussion about books and translation with professors and students of the English Department at the Catholic University of Korea titled Translating Diaspora Literature : Kazuki Kaneshiro’s Go.
